چکیده

Experimental evidence indicates that the stomatal conductance and nitrogen concentration ([N]) of foliage decline under CO2 enrichment, and that the percentage growth response to elevated CO2 is amplified under water limitation, but reduced under nitrogen limitation. We advance simple explanations for these responses based on an optimisation hypothesis applied to a simple model of the annual carbon--nitrogen--water economy of trees growing at a CO2-enrichment experiment at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA. Themodel is shown to have an optimum for leaf [N], stomatal conductance and leaf area index (LAI), where annual plant productivity is maximised. The optimisation is represented in terms of a trade-off between LAI and stomatal conductance, constrained by water supply, and between LAI and leaf [N], constrained by N supply. At elevated CO2 the optimum shifts to reduced stomatal conductance and leaf [N] and enhanced LAI. The model is applied to years with contrasting rainfall and N uptake. The predicted growth response to elevated CO2 is greatest in a dry, high-N year and is reduced in a wet, low-N year. The underlying physiological explanation for this contrast in the effects of water versus nitrogen limitation is that leaf photosynthesis is more sensitive to CO2 concentration ([CO2]) at lower stomatal conductance and is less sensitive to [CO2] at lower leaf [N]. Additional keywords: carbon--nitrogen--water economy, climate change, CO2 enrichment, forest model, leaf area index, stomatal conductance.

Plant growth enhancement by elevated CO2 eliminated by joint water and nitrogen limitation

Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations can fertilize plant growth. The resulting increased plant uptake of CO2 could, in turn, slow increases in atmospheric CO2 levels and associated climate warming. CO2 fertilization e ects may be enhanced when water availability is low, because elevated CO2 also leads to improved plant water-use e ciency. However, CO2 fertilization e ects may be weaker when pl...

پاسخ عملکرد دانه هیبریدهای ذرت به تنش خشکی در مراحل مختلف رشد

Drought stress is the most important limiting factor in crop plants including maize (Zea mays L.), which is the third important world crop after wheat and rice. Water deficiency at different growth stages affects maize yield differently. To examine the response of four maize hybrids to drought stress at different growth stages, a field experiment was carried out as a split plot based on complet...

Effects of High CO2 on Growth and Metabolism of Arabidopsis Seedlings During Growth with a Constantly Limited Supply of Nitrogen

Elevated CO2 has been reported to stimulate plant growth under nitrogen-sufficient conditions, but the effects of CO2 on growth in a constantly nitrogen-limited state, which is relevant to most natural habitats of plants, remain unclear. Here, we maintained Arabidopsis seedlings under such conditions by growing a mutant with reduced nitrate uptake activity on a medium containing nitrate as the ...

Photosynthesis, Growth and Cell Composition of Spirulina platensis (Arthrospira) Under Elevated Atmospheric CO2 and Nitrogen Supplement

The consequences of the addition of CO2 (1%) in cultures of S. platensis are examined in terms of biomass yield, cell composition and external medium composition. CO2 enrichment was tested under nitrogen saturating and nitrogen limiting conditions. Increasing CO2 levels did not cause any change in maximum growth rate while it decreased maximum biomass yield. Protein and pigments were decreased ...

Elevated CO2 increases nitrogen ®xation and decreases soil nitrogen mineralization in Florida scrub oak

We report changes in nitrogen cycling in Florida scrub oak in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 during the ®rst 14 months of experimental treatment. Elevated CO2 stimulated above-ground growth, nitrogen mass, and root nodule production of the nitrogen-®xing vine, Galactia elliottii Nuttall. During this period, elevated CO2 reduced rates of gross nitrogen mineralization in soil, and resulted ...
